U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated this Wednesday, September 17 that Mexico handed over Rafael Caro Quintero on the instructions of President Donald Trump. In a post on X, Bondi held a meeting with the family of Enrique Kiki Camarena.
In the post, she stated that in February, following instructions from Trump, they received custody from Mexico of the killer of the DEA special agent. She also said that Enrique Junior continues his father’s legacy in the field of law enforcement.
On February 27, the Mexican government handed over the kingpin along with 28 other drug traffickers, including former leaders of the Los Zetas cartel, Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, El Viceroy, Tony Montana of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and Chango Méndez of the Familia Michoacána.
At the time, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection argued that the handover was part of coordination, cooperation, and bilateral reciprocity within the framework of respect for sovereignty between both nations.
Subsequently, Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch argued that there was a risk that some of these targets requested by the United States government could be released or that their extradition proceedings would continue to be delayed due to agreements with judges.
For its part, the US Department of Justice pointed out after the extradition of the 29 that many of the defendants were the subject of long-standing US extradition requests that went unheeded during the previous administration, but the Mexican government decided to transfer them to the current US government in response to efforts by the Department of Justice, in accordance with President Trump’s directive.
The United States government indicated that it will not seek the death penalty against Caro Quintero or the other drug traffickers handed over by the Mexican government, which in August handed over another group of 26 criminals, including Abigail González Valencia of the Los Cuinis, a group linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. González Valencia is also the brother-in-law of fugitive Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, leader of the same cartel.
