El Nini’s Audience Differs In Support Of The Former Security Of Los Chapitos

Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, El Nini

Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as El Nini, was identified by U.S. authorities as one of the security chiefs of Los Chapitos. He is currently being held in the Altiplano prison in the State of Mexico, and his trial was recently scheduled for January 24th.

El Nini was captured in November of 2023 after a concentrated operation in Culiacán, Sinaloa. On January 9, the date on which the Pérez Salas’ hearing will take place was reported.

Even though the information had a date of Tuesday, it was on Wednesday, January 10th, that journalist VM Ornelas shared the decision about El Nini’s hearing through social media.

“The constitutional hearing scheduled for today is postponed and rescheduled at 10:50 am on January 24th, 2024,” reads the resolution.

Óscar Noé Medina González, Panu

It is worth noting that US authorities are seeking for El Nini to be extradited. Court documents show that Nestor Isidro worked directly for Óscar Noé Medina González, also known as Panu. Panu is a key figure for Los Chapitos and reports directly to Iván Archivaldo, also known as El Chapito. Iván is the undisputed leader of Los Chapitos, which is a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Even after the capture of the presumed head of security for Los Chapitos, United States President Joe Biden sent a message to his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In the message published by the Department of State, it is also mentioned that the capture of Néstor Isidro Pérez adds to that of Ovidio Guzmán, one of the sons of Joaquín Guzmán Loera and the first of the Chapitos to face justice in the US.

By December 12th, El Nini’s defense team filed for protection, which was rejected by the Seventh District Court in Matters of Protection and Federal Trials based in Toluca, so it was passed on to Mexico City.

“Integrate to the profession from the Seventh District Court of Amparo and Federal Trials in the State of Mexico, based in Toluca. This constitutional control body shares the invoked criterion, accepts the declined jurisdiction, and assumes knowledge of the case. The initiated lawsuit is accepted and” appears in the resolution.”

Nestor Isidro Perez Salas cannot be handed over to the United States until the injunction is resolved. Leaked reports from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) indicate that El Nini would be the leader of the Ninis, a criminal cell made up of young individuals with a violent profile.

Some reports indicate that the arrest of El Nini may have stemmed from a decision by Los Chapitos to “abandon him,” according to reports from the media Milenio. This would coincide with the lack of response from the Sinaloa Cartel following the arrest that occurred in late November 2023. 

Some criminal group members celebrated after the arrest of the man linked to the security of Los Chapitos. Reports consulted by security specialist journalist Oscar Balderas indicate that the capture of Néstor Isidro would have been by orders of Panu.
