The recent capture of ‘El Barbas’ has dealt a major blow to Mexican drug cartels and their international operations. Operating as an independent drug dealer, he had links to powerful organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Gulf Cartel, New Empire Cartel, and the Tepito Union. The cautious operator had evaded authorities for some time, but was finally caught in a series of simultaneous raids by the Attorney General’s Office and the Navy Secretariat. With little information available about him, ‘El Barbas’ was considered a high-level operator and is now facing an arrest warrant for organized crime. If you’ve been following the latest news in the world of drug trafficking, you may have come across the story of Francisco René Luna, a 44-year-old leader of a criminal organization known as the Northeast Cartel. Recently, Luna was sentenced to 216 months in prison for trafficking drugs into the United States from Mexico for almost a decade. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been closely monitoring Luna’s activities for the past nine years, and they finally managed to apprehend him in 2019.
According to prosecutor Alamdar S. Hamdani, Luna admitted to being the leader of a drug trafficking organization while residing in Houston, Texas. His main role was overseeing the delivery of smuggled cocaine shipments, supplied by the notorious Gulf Cartel, once a month in private vehicles. Luna’s activities were no secret to US authorities, as he had been on their radar since 2011.
In fact, in 2015, the DEA executed a search warrant at Luna’s hideouts in Houston, where they found 176 kilograms of cocaine, two kilograms of methamphetamine, and $3.5 million in drug profits. Despite this, Luna managed to evade arrest for four more years before being apprehended in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2019.
After being extradited to the United States, Luna pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. This means that he will not be eligible for release until 2042 when he is approximately 62 years old.
The Gulf Cartel, which is known for its stronghold in the border state of Tamaulipas, has been expanding its illegal activities into other states in Mexico. Along with drug trafficking, the organization is also involved in crimes such as human trafficking, kidnappings, and extortion. To ensure the success of their operations, they have armed branches and factions, such as The Scorpions, The Cyclones, and The Bald Ones, who are constantly fighting for control of territory with other criminal organizations.

As the CJNG continues to expand its reach and dominance in the Mexican drug cartels landscape, their tactics for expansion and profit have evolved. One such tactic is the “franchise rentals” offered to local criminal groups, allowing them to use the initials and strategies of the CJNG in exchange for payment and alliances. This not only opens doors to conflict zones, but also creates strong alliances and access to corruption networks. It is rumored that this tactic was originally used against their main rival, the Sinaloa Cartel, and has proven to be a successful move in their quest for power. Stay tuned for more news and updates on the CJNG and other cartels on cartelinsider.com.
