If you’ve been following the latest news in the world of drug trafficking, you may have come across the story of Francisco René Luna, a 44-year-old leader of a criminal organization known as the Northeast Cartel. Recently, Luna was sentenced to 216 months in prison for trafficking drugs into the United States from Mexico for almost a decade. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been closely monitoring Luna’s activities for the past nine years, and they finally managed to apprehend him in 2019.

According to prosecutor Alamdar S. Hamdani, Luna admitted to being the leader of a drug trafficking organization while residing in Houston, Texas. His main role was overseeing the delivery of smuggled cocaine shipments, supplied by the notorious Gulf Cartel, once a month in private vehicles. Luna’s activities were no secret to US authorities, as he had been on their radar since 2011.

In fact, in 2015, the DEA executed a search warrant at Luna’s hideouts in Houston, where they found 176 kilograms of cocaine, two kilograms of methamphetamine, and $3.5 million in drug profits. Despite this, Luna managed to evade arrest for four more years before being apprehended in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2019.

After being extradited to the United States, Luna pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. This means that he will not be eligible for release until 2042 when he is approximately 62 years old.

The Gulf Cartel, which is known for its stronghold in the border state of Tamaulipas, has been expanding its illegal activities into other states in Mexico. Along with drug trafficking, the organization is also involved in crimes such as human trafficking, kidnappings, and extortion. To ensure the success of their operations, they have armed branches and factions, such as The Scorpions, The Cyclones, and The Bald Ones, who are constantly fighting for control of territory with other criminal organizations.
