A Drug Lord’s Spiritual Correspondence
In the book ‘Welcome to Sinaloa,’ author Diego Enrique Osorno unveils a lesser-known side of drug lord Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. Known as a devout individual, Gallardo engaged in an unusual practice: writing letters to Pope John Paul II during his first 16 years in prison.

Papal Recognition
Remarkably, Pope John Paul II, and later Benedict XVI, acknowledged Gallardo’s letters. This correspondence suggests that the Popes knew Gallardo’s existence and notorious background. The continuation of this practice, even after the passing of Pope John Paul II, reflects Gallardo’s deep-rooted Catholic faith and his desire for spiritual connection.

Family and Faith
Félix Gallardo’s family, deeply entrenched in Catholicism, spread across the Pacific region. This religious influence was a significant part of his life, prompting him to regularly send handwritten messages to the Vatican, as noted by his lawyer.
A Cultured Criminal Mind
Gallardo’s penchant for writing extended beyond religious correspondence. He often penned reflections and memories of his time in prison, a habit that struck many security experts as unusual for a drug trafficker. His writings provided rare insights into the mind of one of Mexico’s most infamous drug lords.

Sharing His Story with Osorno
For ‘Welcome to Sinaloa’, Félix’s son provided Osorno with 35 pages of his father’s writings. These pages included reflections on life in the Altiplano prison and detailed the days leading up to Gallardo’s capture. This material offered a unique perspective into Gallardo’s experiences and thoughts, presenting a multifaceted view of a man known primarily for his criminal exploits.
Understanding ‘The Chief of Chiefs’
Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo’s story is a complex tapestry of crime, faith, and introspection. His correspondence with the Popes and his prison diaries reveal a side of him that contrasts sharply with his public persona as a feared drug lord. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of Gallardo, offering a glimpse into the personal struggles and reflections of a man at the center of Mexico’s drug trade history.
