A recent drug trafficking incident at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has once again raised concerns about airport safety. A man of Swedish origin was arrested while attempting to transport 30 kilograms of methamphetamine to London. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 30th, was not reported by the AICM until the following day. The arrested individual has not been identified and it is still unknown if he has ties to any criminal group.

This is not the first time that the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) has intercepted narcotics at the AICM. Just last week, they caught a person carrying 6,145 grams of methamphetamine in a suitcase headed to Madrid. As a result, the airport has implemented stricter measures, particularly on flights to Narita, Japan and Madrid, Spain.

Former director of the AICM, Carlos Velázquez Tiscareño, shared a report during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference, highlighting the airport’s increasing efforts to prevent illegal activities. He also mentioned a previous incident in which a man from the US was caught trying to smuggle drugs to Narita, resulting in his immediate arrest.

The AICM has emphasized their commitment to passenger safety, but incidents like these continue to raise concerns about drug trafficking in Mexico. Stay updated on the latest news and concerns by following our Twitter account and contacting Mica at mica@cartelinsider.com.

“Mexican criminal groups have always been notoriously well-armed, but recent reports from USA Today suggest that their arsenal may now include a powerful portable missile capable of taking out tanks and attack aircraft. This dangerous weapon, known as the FGM-148 Javelin, was designed for use by the US Army and Marines, but it seems at least two cartels in Mexico have gotten their hands on it. In fact, a Mexican federal security officer revealed that they have confiscated two Javelin missiles from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

In a shocking interview with journalist Steve Fisher, a suspected hitman from Sinaloa, who goes by the alias ‘El Flaco’, revealed that he has been training fellow members of organized crime to use these military devices. ‘El Flaco’ himself received training to use shoulder-launched missiles, including the Javelin, during special operations. But now, he is in charge of instructing others and one of his apprentices is believed to be responsible for a tragic helicopter crash that killed a high-ranking Mexican official and four others.

According to documents from the forensic investigation, the crash was caused by an explosive projectile that hit the helicopter’s door – and the residue found on the aircraft only corresponds to one type of missile: the FGM-148 Javelin. Despite these shocking revelations, US security officials have denied that Mexican cartels have access to this type of weaponry. However, ‘El Flaco’ stated that criminal groups are increasingly facing opponents with more resistant armored vehicles, and thus need more advanced weapons in order to maintain their dominance.

The idea of Mexican cartels having access to such a powerful and destructive weapon is terrifying, but unfortunately, it seems to be the reality.
