July 1, 2024 – The federal government has confirmed the murder of 19 men in La Concordia, Chiapas, in what appears to be a violent confrontation between rival drug cartels.
On June 28, a gruesome video surfaced showing lifeless bodies in the bed of a dump truck. The victims, wearing tactical gear and carrying long guns, were identified as members of a criminal organization operating between Chiapas and Guatemala, presumed to be the Chiapas Cartel.
The perpetrators, allegedly from the Sinaloa Cartel, ambushed and killed these men in a brutal attack. Authorities received a 911 call on June 29 reporting the presence of dead bodies along a dirt road connecting Jaltenango de la Paz with the ranch La Reforma.
Upon arrival, officials found a white Nissan double-cab truck and a white dump truck blocking the road. Inside the dump truck bed were 15 bodies, with two more inside the cab, two on the side, and another approximately 100 meters away, all victims of high-caliber gunfire.
The Chiapas General Prosecutor’s Office has opened investigation file C.I.0017-020-2908-2024, documenting that at least six of the deceased had Guatemalan identification.
Preliminary investigations indicate a fierce battle for control over the drug and human trafficking routes in this border region between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel.
Following this massacre, the federal government deployed an additional 1,200 troops from the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense to bolster security in the area. This move aims to curb the escalating violence and protect the local population from the criminal activities of these cartels.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lamented the incident, emphasizing the involvement of both Mexican and Guatemalan nationals in this tragic event. He highlighted the ongoing issues of drug and human trafficking fueling such violence and reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
