The investigation into the attack on the family chapel of former Sinaloa Cartel leader, Dámaso López Núñez, “El Licenciado,” has stalled. Sinaloa’s prosecutor, Sara Bruna Quiñónez Estrada, revealed that the family has not cooperated with authorities, despite the reported damages.
“No one from the family has requested compensation or come forward. We took action when the damages were first reported, but we’ve had no response from them,” the prosecutor said on August 14th.
The chapel was first targeted on July 28th when a body was stolen from it. Further vandalism occurred on July 31st at the mausoleum located between Portecelli and El Melón, near El Quila and Eldorado, Sinaloa.

The family members of Dámaso López Núñez, “El Licenciado,” specifically his father, Dámaso López García, and brother, Adolfo López Núñez, were present in the building that was vandalized. Following the events, images surfaced online showing the property damaged by unknown individuals, who reportedly used excavators during the second attack.
As of July 31, Sinaloa authorities confirmed that the family had not reported the incidents, a situation that remains unchanged. However, a day earlier, the state prosecutor’s office announced that an investigation had been launched into the destruction and theft of human remains.
The official investigation focuses on the desecration of a tomb and the theft of remains at a cemetery in Eldorado, but no formal complaints have been filed by the family.

The identity of those responsible for the vandalism at the chapel remains unclear, as no criminal organization has claimed responsibility. Additionally, the whereabouts of the stolen bodies are still unknown.
Dámaso López García died of a heart attack in 2007, while his brother, Adolfo López Núñez, was assassinated in 2019 outside his home. The damage to their family chapel occurred shortly after the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and the rumored surrender of Joaquín Guzmán López (one of El Chapo’s sons) on July 25th.
Dámaso López Núñez, “El Licenciado,” was extradited to the United States in July 2018 on drug trafficking charges. According to the U.S. Department of State, he conspired to traffic narcotics from 2003 to 2016. He was arrested in Mexico City in 2017 after being captured on video by a hacker.

Following the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, Dámaso López Núñez, “El Licenciado,” was positioned to become one of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel due to their close relationship.
Both Mexican and U.S. authorities report that López was instrumental in helping El Chapo escape from prison in 2001. After facilitating the escape, López left his position at Puente Grande prison and officially joined the Sinaloa Cartel.
