A federal security operation in Durango has once again placed the state at the center of the Sinaloa Cartel’s internal conflict, following an attempt by authorities to capture Leonel Garcia—alias “El 40″—who is identified as a key operative for the “Los Mayos” faction.
According to national media reports, the operation took place in the early hours of June 9 at a ranch in the town of Casablanca, located along the Durango-Parral highway. Personnel from the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and other security agencies participated in the action.
However, the alleged criminal leader reportedly managed to escape alongside several associates via an alternate exit from the property. Although the primary target wasn’t captured, the security cabinet announced the arrest of six individuals, as well as the seizure of high-powered weapons, vehicles (some armored), tactical gear, and cash.
Federal investigations identify “El 40” as a significant commander within the criminal organization operating in Durango. Following the downfall of the group’s former leaders, the criminal structure strengthened its alliance with the faction led by the sons of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada’s associates.
The operation comes at a time of high tension within the Sinaloa Cartel, marked by a confrontation between “Los Mayos” and “Los Chapitos” over control of strategic territories in the country’s north.
