A family trip ended with the family being held against their will in Guanajuato; twelve hours later, they were released—but not without coming under fire. A family traveling along the Querétaro-Celaya section of the Pan-American Highway fell victim to kidnapping and a subsequent armed attack.
State public security reports indicate that a couple traveling with two minors—aged 14 and 3—were intercepted on the highway by armed men around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The man, identified as 37-year-old Óscar Antonio, told authorities that a vehicle equipped with flashing emergency lights signaled them to pull over.
Upon stopping, they realized the individuals weren’t law enforcement officers but armed men who held him against his will for several hours and stole their cash and bank cards. They were not released and allowed to continue their journey until 9:00 a.m. Wednesday; however, their captors opened fire on them as they left.
Consequently, Óscar Antonio and his 3-year-old son sustained gunshot wounds—he in the hand, and his young son, Óscar Gael, in the right foot. His wife, Guadalupe (37), and the 14-year-old adolescent were unharmed.
After the shooting, they fled the scene and headed to the Celaya General Hospital, where they received medical attention; their condition is reported as stable and not life-threatening. There, in the emergency department parking lot, forensic experts from the State Prosecutor’s Office examined the family’s SUV to collect evidence for the investigation.
