“El Titán” secures a judicial ruling in his favor in Nuevo León.
José Antonio Cortes Huerta, aka “El Titan,” obtained a judicial decision that altered his legal status. While his proceedings continue, a ruling allowed him to leave detention and remain under house arrest.
After a federal judge in Nuevo León authorized his transfer to a hospital last weekend due to various health issues, the alleged fuel-theft ringleader benefited from a provisional *amparo* (injunction) suspension that allowed him to avoid prison and return home.
A district judge based in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, modified the precautionary measure from preventive detention to house arrest, with authorization to leave the residence for a maximum of six days.
The specific address where he will be confined wasn’t disclosed, though he is prohibited from leaving the country. The Tamaulipas judge’s ruling prohibits transferring “El Titán” to a prison outside Nuevo León or executing any arrest warrant against him—at least until the definitive suspension is resolved; the hearing for this is scheduled for next Monday, June 15.
José Antonio Cortes Huerta, aka El Titan,” was arrested by federal forces from Mexico City on May 9 at his home in the Portal del Huajuco neighborhood in southern Monterrey. A woman—apparently his partner—was captured alongside him but was released within the constitutional timeframe after another district judge in Nuevo León ruled the arrest illegal.
As part of the same operation against fuel theft, two other men were arrested on Sunday, May 10, in the Valle de San Ángel neighborhood of San Pedro, but they, too, were released due to illegal arrest.
