In addition to Ismael El Mayo Zambada’s sons, there is another person who could become the heir to the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that is controlled by the also known as “Lord of the Hat”: Juan Carlos Félix Gastélum (known as “El Chavo Félix”), son-in-law of the boss as he is married to his daughter, Teresita Zambada Ortiz.
By direct line, the natural heir of El Mayo Zambada would be one of the 10 children he revealed to have in the interview that Julio Scherer conducted in 2010: Vicente Zambada Niebla (Vicentillo), Ismael Zambada Imperial (Mayito Gordo), Ismael Zambada Sicairos (Mayito Flaco), or Serafín Zambada Ortiz (El Sera), would be the first on the list.
However, it is known that his daughters control part of the businesses that the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel built with drug trafficking money: María Teresa, Midiam Patricia, Modesta, Mónica del Rosario Niebla; as well as Teresita Zambada Ortiz, the latter married to “El Chavo Félix”.
It is precisely this romantic relationship that could help Félix Gastélum the opportunity to become the heir of El Mayo Zambada, since the capo’s children are either serving a sentence in freedom, fugitives from justice, or recently released but under the scrutiny of authorities from the United States and Mexico.
Given this scenario, it is presumed that “El Chavo Félix” is one of the closest and most trusted men of El Mayo Zambada; he has no criminal charges in the United States and has managed to maintain a low profile, just as the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel prefers.
There is little information known about “El Chavo Félix”, however, in the book “The Traitor” by journalist Anabel Hernandez, it was revealed that his father-in-law, Agustín Ortiz, would be a distant nephew of former president Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.

A strong mobilization of the Armed Forces was recorded during the first hours of February 1st over the southern region of Culiacán, Sinaloa; helicopters from the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) and the Naval Secretariat (Semar) flew over the area while patrol trucks monitored the streets, causing uncertainty among the residents who did not know what was happening.
The hours passed and the information did not become any clearer; schools in the communities of Elsalado, Quilá, Emiliano Zapata, and Oso Viejo suspended their activities out of fear of an escalation of violence due to the military presence in the region controlled by El Mayo Zambada’s faction.
This latest piece of information gave rise to rumors that federal authorities were on the hunt for “The Hat Man” or his son-in-law “El Chavo Félix.” None of these arrests were confirmed, although there were reports suggesting the capture of a lieutenant of El Mayo Zambada. However, federal sources consulted by this medium have not yet confirmed any arrests at this time.
Faced with the secrecy of federal authorities, the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, declared that he was not aware of the operation because it is being coordinated by the Mexican Army. He even added that at the State Security Table, military personnel did not mention the issue.
Meanwhile, in a column published by journalist Héctor de Mauleón in October 2022, he reports on a criminal group known as “Los Demonios” or “The Seven Demons” – the armed branch of El Mayo Zambada – operating in the Sonoran municipalities of San Luis Río Colorado, Caborca, Pitiquito, Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco, the latter under the orders of “El Chavo Félix”.
