Search warrants were executed at two properties in Tijuana, and at one of them, authorities discovered a tunnel connecting to the United States. Tony Álvarez has all the details for us. Tony, it’s good to see you. Go ahead—good afternoon. Good afternoon to you as well, from Tijuana.
We are currently located on Carlos Chávez Street in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood—practically just meters away from the border strip and near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry—where, as you can see, authorities entered this specific residence yesterday afternoon after executing a search warrant and discovering a tunnel that connected Mexican territory directly to the United States.
The tunnel featured lighting, ventilation, and an electronic sliding mechanism operating in both directions; it measured approximately 265 meters in length and reached a depth of 6.30 meters beneath the property you see on your screen. We can clearly see both the official seals and the search warrant itself posted on the premises.
Illicit substances were found—specifically marijuana and, allegedly, methamphetamine—along with cell phones and various documents. Furthermore, according to local authorities, it is believed that this space had been used for illicit trafficking activities involving both weapons and other prohibited substances.
It is worth noting that we attempted to contact U.S. authorities to obtain their account of the events. We understand that they have been in contact with Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense; however, they haven’t yet responded to our inquiries regarding whether the tunnel’s exit point on the other side of the border has already been identified.
We will be keeping a close watch for any further information or updates that may emerge regarding this situation. We can confirm that there are still five pets inside this property—specifically five dogs: four puppies and one adult—as of this moment.
Aside from that, we can report that the property on Carlos Chávez Street in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood—here in Tijuana, Baja California—has now been officially secured. We will continue to follow this case closely, Tony.
