In April 2021, Vicente Zambada Niebla, also known as ‘El Vicentillo’, was released from the United States Department of Prisons. Initially incarcerated at the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center, he received a sentence reduction in May 2019 due to his extensive cooperation with U.S. authorities. His disclosures provided insights into the Sinaloa cartel’s operations and alleged collusion with the Mexican government, as detailed in journalist Anabel Hernández’s book “El Traidor.” These revelations included information about key cartel members, strategies, and government corruption.

Hernández’s access to various documents, facilitated by Zambada’s lawyer Fernando Gaxiola, revealed a personal letter from Zambada to his father, Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, expressing longing and loyalty amidst his cooperation. Despite the collaboration from several former cartel members, ‘El Mayo’ remains at large, illustrating the enduring complexity and challenges in dismantling cartel networks.
