Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, alias “R5”, an alleged criminal leader of the Reyes cartel—has died. His death occurred during a confrontation in Los Reyes, Michoacán. Known as “El Wicho,” he had assumed leadership of this criminal group following the capture of Alfonso N. —known as “La Quiringua”—in July.
He was implicated in the wave of violence and homicides in Peribán and Tocumbo, as well as in municipalities bordering Jalisco. El Wicho was under investigation for drug-related offenses and trafficking; a 3-million-peso reward had been offered for his capture.
El R5 had been a member of the self-defense groups and operated addiction treatment centers; however, these facilities— alleged addiction treatment centers—actually served as hideouts for criminals who had defected from the Knights Templar criminal group. Later, these spaces were used to recruit people.
