US Postpones Sentencing Against Genaro García Luna

The sentencing hearing for the former official was scheduled for October 9.

His sentence will be handed down on October 16

Judge Brian Cogan decided to postpone again the sentence against the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, found guilty in early 2023 of crimes related to cocaine trafficking and lying to US authorities.

According to a letter from the federal court in Brooklyn, New York, he will be sentenced

on October 16 at 3:30 in the afternoon.

The US Attorney’s Office has requested that he be sentenced to life imprisonment, while the Mexican nationals defense has requested that he only be sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

García Luna was accused by several former drug traffickers of having received million-dollar bribes, first when he was head of the Criminal Investigation Agency and then head of the SSP, to allow organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel, the Beltrán Leyva cartel and the Milenio Cartel to traffic cocaine to the United States.

What could be the sentence against García Luna?

On Thursday, September 19, the United States Attorney’s Office asked Judge Brian Cogan to impose a life sentence on the former Secretary of Public Security, after he was found guilty in early January 2023 of conspiring to traffic cocaine into the country.

“His crimes demand justice. For these reasons and for the reasons already explained, the government respectfully requests that the Court impose a life sentence,” reads the sentencing memorandum presented by the US Attorney’s Office, prior to the Mexican’s sentencing.
