The ‘Los Granados’ cartel operates in the municipalities of Tecpan de Galeana, Atoyac de Álvarez and Coyuca de Benítez.
The town of San Luis de la Loma, located in the municipality of Tecpan de Galeana, on the Costa Grande of Guerrero, has become the stronghold of one of the strongest criminal groups in that region, who have been led by Salvador Granados Vargas, known as “Chava Granados” or “The Lord of the Mangoes,” for more than a decade.
According to reports leaked by the Guacamaya Leaks collective, the criminal organization of “Los Granados” maintains hegemony and operations within the territories of municipalities such as Tecpan de Galeana, Atoyac de Álvarez and Coyuca de Benítez, after repelling an antagonistic group called “Los Rodríguez,” who moved to the western area of Acapulco and communities in the rural area of Coyuca de Benítez.
What has the ‘Los Granados’ cartel done?
The criminal group has been accused of being responsible for the murder of at least 13 members of the Public Security Secretariat of the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez on October 23, 2023, allegedly after refusing to be recruited by the cartel.
In the early hours of Thursday, October 24, the rivalry between the criminal groups that entered the municipality of Técpan de Galeana, caused clashes that left three alleged hitmen killed and five more arrested, after coming face to face with Mexican Army personnel who were responding to the population’s call for help.
The criminal group ‘Los Granados’ gained relevance in 2008, when clashes were recorded between Rogaciano Alba and Rubén “El Nene Granados”, in the fight for the reconfiguration of the Sinaloa Cartel after the division of Joaquín “El Chapo Guzmán” and Arturo Beltrán Leyva, in which until today, the criminal group Los Granados maintains the hegemony of the towns and communities of the corridor of the Costa Grande of Guerrero.
The hostilities between the criminal group Los Granados and other criminal groups intensified after the murder of the son of the criminal leader Salvador Granados in the municipality of San Luis de la Loma in 2016, so that during the last eight years, the incursions of criminal cells seeking to take control of the corridor of the Costa Grande of Guerrero have been more constant.
