In the wake of two brutal incidents that rocked Guanajuato—a massacre at a Posada in Salvatierra and the murder of six youths in Celaya—the region once again became the backdrop for a grim discovery. On Friday, December 22, 2023, a male body was found hanging from a bridge, exhibiting clear signs of torture and connecting the two municipalities steeped in recent violence. The chilling sight along the Celaya-Salvatierra road, reported by motorists around 8:30 p.m., revealed the half-naked victim suspended by the feet, wearing only underwear, with his face obscured and a menacing message left nearby.

Responding quickly to the reports, the National Guard (GN) and the State Public Security Forces (FSPE) confirmed the horrifying scene. The body, alongside a green placard bearing a narco-message, became the center of an intense investigation led by experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). The message, stark and threatening, promised similar fates to those involved with “white jale” (methamphetamine) sales and supporting rival factions linked to the notorious ‘Chuy’ and ‘Yeyo’. Signed by the “CSRL, Special Forces Calavera,” it was a clear signal of the ongoing turf war between the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel and their bitter rivals, the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), led by the infamous Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho.”
The message not only indicated a brutal warning but also shed light on the method of differentiation in drug sales between the two feuding cartels, with CSRL allegedly distributing blue methamphetamine as opposed to CJNG’s white version. This chilling incident underscores the ferocity of the drug war in Guanajuato, with cartels employing brutal tactics to assert dominance and instill fear.

The discovery of the body is a somber addition to the string of violent acts attributed to the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel. Just days earlier, on December 20, they were unofficially implicated in a vicious attack on a Posada at the former San José del Carmen hacienda in Salvatierra, which resulted in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries. As the authorities continue their investigations and the community reels from the relentless violence, the message is clear: the battle for control in Guanajuato is far from over, with each act of brutality marking another chapter in the region’s troubled narrative. The widespread fear and unrest highlight the urgent need for concerted efforts to restore peace and dismantle the criminal networks that perpetuate this cycle of violence.
