Months before his surrender, Joaquín Guzmán López had received Washington’s offer to surrender to the US authorities. According to Pérez, Chapo’s son not only betrayed his father’s compadre, but also used violence to get El Mayo Zambada onto the plane that would take him into the hands of the FBI.

“His legs were tied and a black bag was placed over his head. He was then thrown into the trunk of a pickup truck and taken to an airstrip. There he was forced onto a plane, his legs tied to a seat by Joaquin and brought to the United States against his will. The only people on the plane were the pilot, Joaquin and my client,” Pérez explained.

Although the relationship between Los Chapitos and the El Mayo Zambada faction had worsened in recent years, even leading to violent disputes between their groups of hitmen, contact between both parties had always been necessary, because the trafficking routes, contacts and resources of the cartel are, for the most part, shared.

The rupture between both cells now seems imminent, leaving the brothers Iván and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar in a direct confrontation with Ismael Zambada Sicairos, Mayito Flaco, defending their father’s legacy.

Joaquin Guzmán López will be presented this week before a judge of the Northern District Court of Illinois, to face charges of trafficking in cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine, money laundering and organized crime. The 35-year-old man is shaping up to be one of the highest-profile snitches for the US authorities, and at the same time, to one day be free again.
