The sicarios made sure to accomplish the kill and humiliate him.

Online, he built a character—he played it up for the camera with exotic pets and a luxury lifestyle—and mixed color commentary on cartel news into a show on YouTube and his podcast. He didn’t hedge.
He went after Mayito Flaco by name, often and loudly. He was outspoken. That brought reach—and heat. For months, he’d been ridden by the same names: Mayito Flaco and Mayiza.
