The General Prosecutor’s Office in Chiapas is investigating the kidnapping of María García López, the council president of Altamirano, and two others, which occurred on April 25th. The abductions took place in Ocosingo’s Guadalupe neighborhood by individuals not affiliated with the Investigative Police. These events have triggered an extensive investigation by the jungle district’s prosecutor’s office, which began promptly following the incident.

Witnesses near a restaurant on the Ocosingo to San Cristóbal highway reported seeing the council president and her companions forcibly taken by a group purportedly associated with a social organization. This kidnapping follows social media reports that García López’s brother was also abducted the previous day. Further complicating matters, Gabriela Coutiño, a reporter, has stated that both García López and her brother are being held by armed groups in separate locations, with additional reports of detentions in Copainalá.
The political landscape has been further strained by an incident involving Claudia Sheinbaum, a presidential candidate, who was detained at a checkpoint during her campaign. This event, dismissed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as potentially staged, was later contradicted by video evidence from self-proclaimed self-defense groups. These groups claim their actions are a defense against extortion, not criminal activity, highlighting the entrenched influence of drug cartels in the region and the complex dynamics affecting local and national politics.
