The war that began more than two decades ago between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Arellano Felix Cartel continues to make headlines even though most of its founders and those who started the fight are now dead or behind bars.
An investigation by Semanario Zeta Tijuana revealed a new chapter in the war that resulted in an attack against a character identified as James Bryant Corona, also known as “El Apache”, one of the main operators for the Arellano Felix organization on the northern side of the border.
According to the border media, there are two hypotheses about the attack on “El Apache”: one points to an internal dispute to separate from the leadership of Edwin Huerta Nuño, alias “El Flaquito”, who last December was on the verge of falling into the hands of justice after being shot in a pharmacy in Tijuana; the second theory is related to the war with the Sinaloa Cartel that reignited last year after the alleged drug theft orchestrated by the Arellano Felix and members of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
According to reports from the police and local media, “El Apache” suffered two attacks: the first one happened outside a Chili’s restaurant in Chula Vista, California, on Tuesday, March 26, where he was shot and injured in the leg; the second shooting occurred in the residential area of Salerno Luxury in Otay Ranch county, just a few steps from the border strip.
The initial reports indicated that there was one person dead and two arrested for the shootout; unofficially it was indicated that the victim would be “El Apache” as his residence is located there; however, later, it was confirmed that he was in the hospital and that the shooting was directed at his family members.

Just on February 17th, Cristian Espinoza Silver was murdered in front of the Lombard Place apartments at the University of San Diego; just like his father -Saúl Silver Quintana- he was identified as a member of the Arellano Félix cartel, and the Tijuana newspaper Zeta reported that there were other members of the cartel living in the region.
It is worth noting that on the southern side of the border, the war between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Arellano Felix is being fought on the streets of Ensenada, Tijuana, Mexicali, and Tecate. “El Flaquito,” “El Apache,” and Héctor Gil García, also known as “El Kado” or “El Ka2ador,” are the main leaders of what remains of the so-called Tijuana Cartel.
And it is precisely these two last characters who the Sinaloa Cartel accuses of “killing innocents” in the city of Tecate.
Reports state that the Sinaloa Cartel has a greater presence in the cities of Mexicali and Tecate. Still, they have not been able to make progress in Tijuana and Ensenada, two of the main strongholds of the Arellano Felix and where most of the drugs are crossed to the United States, making it a strategic area for the narco and the sending of illegal substances to the northern side of the border. It has also been identified that the Arellano Felix has formed alliances and agreements with some cells of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) to stop the attacks from the Sinaloa group.
