Its appearance on the drug trafficking map was registered in 2009, but despite this, it has become one of the biggest threats to authorities in Mexico and the United States. Its extreme violence and remarkable organization have caused its rapid expansion, currently reaching at least 21 states within the country. This is the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the criminal group with the most rivals within Mexican territory.
Founded and led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as ‘El Mencho’, the CJNG is considered one of the two most powerful criminal organizations at present, and is therefore held responsible for much of the violence in the country.
US authorities also refer that he is responsible for the trafficking of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl in their territory and at least 100 other countries around the world.
“The Jalisco Cartel has presence and influence through associates, facilitators and runners on all continents, except Antarctica,” notes a report from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), published in July 2023.
But its high operational capacity would not be possible without the alliance it maintains with ‘Los Cuinis’, a criminal group led by the Valencia brothers that, since the founding of the ‘cartel of the four letters’, has operated as its main financial branch.
However, there are other criminal organizations that have been of vital importance to the CJNG. Which ones are they?

Research data on the presence of criminal groups and security forces in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic from the Drug Policy Program (PPD) of the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE) indicate that the CJNG has at least 15 allied groups.
Among them stands out La Línea, armed branch of the Tijuana Cartel; the Lagarto Operative Group; La Mancha; Los Cabos; Los Tlacos and the Tijuana New Generation Cartel.
According to the same report, these alliances make it the organization with the most criminal associations, but it also stands out for having the largest number of enemies.
Among them, the Sinaloa Cartel stands out, currently led by Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada and ‘Los Chapitos’, sons of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán; the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel; Los Zetas; Los Viagras; the Tláhuac Cartel; and Guerreros Unidos.

Also, La Familia Michoacana; the Independent Cartel of Acapulco (CIDA); Los Talibanes; Los Pájaros Sierra and armed units and criminal cells that operate for the Sinaloa Cartel.
It should be noted that, currently, the US Department of State offers a 10 million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of its leader, ‘El Mencho’.
