At least five people were killed and one more was injured Sunday afternoon during an armed attack on the Ayapa–Mecoacán highway in the municipality of Jalpa de Méndez, about 36 kilometers from Villahermosa.
According to initial reports, the victims were traveling on motorcycles when they were intercepted and shot at by armed individuals.
Five people died at the scene, while one injured person was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
A sign was found at the site on which the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) claimed responsibility for the attack. The message was seized by authorities as part of the investigation.
Reports circulating on social media suggest that some of the deceased may have been off-duty police officers; however, this information hasn’t yet been confirmed by official sources.
Federal, state, and municipal security forces arrived at the scene to secure the area, collect evidence, and begin the corresponding investigations.
The Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office (FGET) hasn’t yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
