New Arrest Warrant Issued for Hernán Bermúdez, Alleged Leader of ‘La Barredora’

The Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office has filed a new case of forced disappearance against the former official

Previously, Hernán Bermúdez Requena—known as “El Abuelo” (The Grandfather) or “Comandante H”—the alleged leader of “La Barredora,” filed a complaint challenging a ruling by Daniel Marcelino Niño Jiménez, the Fourth District Judge for Criminal Matters based in Toluca, State of Mexico. The judge had dismissed as groundless an *amparo* (constitutional protection) petition filed by Bermúdez Requena earlier this month in an attempt to prevent his extradition to the United States.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Tabasco (FGET) announced that it has obtained and executed a new arrest warrant against the former Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Tabasco, Hernán Bermúdez Requena, for his alleged involvement in the crime of forced disappearance.

**Former Official Already Detained in Federal Prison**

In a statement issued this Monday, the state agency noted that, following an analysis of the evidentiary data presented, a Control Judge issued the judicial order. The agency highlighted that Hernán “N” is already being held at Federal Prison No. 1, where he is currently facing separate criminal proceedings.

“To date—based on the investigations and the case history regarding this forced disappearance—the inquiry has resulted in the issuance of 19 arrest warrants, 10 of which have already led to individuals being formally bound over for trial,” the FGET detailed.

The agency added: “It is worth noting that he is presumed innocent and shall be treated as such throughout all stages of the criminal proceedings, until such time as his culpability is established via a final judgment issued by the competent judicial authority.”

It is important to point out that on Tuesday, March 24, the three-month extension granted to the FGET expired. This extension—intended to allow for the conclusion of the supplementary investigation into the case of Hernán Bermúdez Requena (“El Abuelo” or “Comandante H”), the alleged leader of “La Barredora”—had been authorized by Ramón Adolfo Brown Ruiz, the Control Judge for Judicial Region 9 in Villahermosa.

He faces multiple charges and arrest warrants

From that point on, the Tabasco State Prosecutor’s Office, led by Óscar Vázquez Landeros, has 15 business days to file formal charges against the former state secretary of public safety, who is currently incarcerated at the Altiplano prison on charges of criminal conspiracy, extortion, and express kidnapping.

After indicting Bermúdez Requena in September of last year, Judge Ramón Adolfo Brown Ruiz granted the Public Prosecutor’s Office three months for a supplementary investigation, which expired in December 2025.

However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office handling the case requested three additional months to gather evidence and carry out various proceedings, which conclude this
