After the numerous drug blockades carried out in various municipalities of Guanajuato, state authorities were able to detain three individuals in possession of firearms and drugs. It is presumed that one was the alleged leader of the criminal group behind these disturbances: the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL).
On the afternoon of January 7th, in the Juventino Rosas, Villagran, and Celaya municipalities, there were blockades with burnt vehicles, which caused a strong police mobilization. During these violent acts, a firefighter died after being attacked when he was responding to a fire.
The Secretary of Public Security (SSP) reported that three suspects identified as “alleged members of a criminal group operating in the Laja-Bajío region” were arrested. Although the group’s name was not mentioned, it has been revealed that it would be the CSRL.
Although the authorities in Guanajuato did not reveal the identities of those arrested, it was unofficially announced that among those apprehended was a subject nicknamed “El Monedas”, who would be one of the top leaders of the criminal organization.

Some local newspapers, such as AM, have pointed out that ‘El Monedas’—whose real name has been kept under wraps until now—would be related to José Antonio Yépez Ortiz, alias ‘El Marro’, the leader of the CSRL who was arrested in August 2020.
Although the authorities have not confirmed this, it was preliminarily reported that “El Monedas” is one of the sons of “El Marro”, although other reports identify him as one of his brothers.
The truth is that their primary area of operation is the states of Villagrán, Juventino Rosas, Cortazar, and Celaya, municipalities in Guanajuato where a strong presence of the CSRL has been reported, an organization that is competing for control of the territory with the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG).
Until the publication of this story, the names of the people detained have not been released.
The disturbances in the entity governed by Diego Sinhue Rodriguez originated when state elements carried out surveillance patrols in the San Antonio de los Morelos community, located in the Juventino Rosas, where ‘El Marro’ is from.

During these actions, the uniformed officers were attacked by gunshots from an armed commando aboard a truck. This generated a pursuit that ended when the aggressors stopped their march. At the same time of their arrest, ammunition of various calibers, a firearm, and drugs were also secured.
Official reports indicate members of the criminal group threw star ponchos and caused blockades in:
Community of Yustis, Municipality of Celaya
State Highway 67, at the community of Franco Tavera, in Juventino Rosas.
Community of Santiago de Cuenda
Colony La Providencia, in Celaya
-Highway 45 is free, stretching Celaya-Salamanca at the height of the Villagran return.
Colony of Praderas del Sol, in Juventino Rosas
“Suchitlán community, Villagrán municipality”
Elements of Civil Protection attended to seven fire incidents in total. One of the firefighters who intervened in these tasks, identified as Felipe Jiménez Sánchez, lost his life after being attacked by armed assailants in Celaya.
It is expected that throughout the day, the Guanajuato authorities will provide further information about what has happened and the security measures that will be implemented due to the blockades.
