A police intelligence agent from Tijuana, Baja California, was seriously injured after receiving several gunshots from a firearm during the afternoon of this Saturday while aboard his pickup truck on streets of the Cañón Jonhson neighborhood.
The attack occurred on Johnson Avenue and was recorded on video by surveillance cameras; in the images the attackers can be seen getting out of a sedan and initiating the gunfire against the pair of officers from the Tijuana State Investigations Agency.
As a woman gets out of the truck, a car pulls up beside them and a gunfight starts with the agent inside the vehicle; moments later the assailants flee the scene with one of the gunmen fatally wounded.
In the video, only one minute long, you can see the two agents taking cover from the shots and responding with their service weapons to the aggression, until the aggressors’ vehicle moves away a few metres and allows them to take cover.
According to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the State (FGJ), the aggressors left the car and the hitman dead meters away from the shootout; meanwhile, it was reported that the male officer was transferred to the ISSSTECALI Hospital in grave condition.
So far, the authorities have not confirmed the identity of the killer shot, nor the criminal group to which he belongs nor the motive of the attack against the municipal police.
In the first four days of the new year, three policemen have already been recorded as murdered in the State of Mexico (2) and in the Mexico City (1), keeping the trend of all of 2023 when the death of a uniformed officer was registered every day.

Regarding the police officers killed in the State of Mexico, their deaths occurred while chasing through the streets of Atlacomulco a man carrying a shotgun who, before being arrested, shot the officer in the chest; the second loss of the Mexiquense police occurred in Xonacatlán when the Deputy Director of Municipal Public Safety tried to stop the robbery of a taqueria and the thugs – members of the Tepito Union – shot him.
According to figures from the organization Causa en Común, throughout 2023 the murders of 412 police officers throughout the country were documented, which represented a two percent increase to the total number of victims accounted for in 2022.
Guanajuato became the most dangerous state for the uniformed after accumulating 60 deadly attacks; it is followed by Zacatecas (32), Michoacán (28), Jalisco (24), Veracruz (23) and Baja California (17).
