In Durango, the Mexican Army deployed 600 troops this weekend to reinforce the state’s security strategy. The troops will conduct patrols and ground reconnaissance, establish security checkpoints at key locations, and step up surveillance along roadways and highways.
The Secretariat of National Defense stated that the operation is being carried out in coordination with all three levels of government, aiming to strengthen crime prevention, increase the institutional presence, and contribute to peacebuilding in the state.
To provide context: in the mountainous region of Durango where these special forces units were deployed, the primary criminal presence belongs to the Sinaloa Cartel, which operates in a fragmented manner through various cells.
Notable among these are the group known as “Gente del Guano” (linked to Aureliano Guzmán Loera) and the Cabrera Sarabia group, which holds influence in the Laguna region.
The “Golden Triangle” corridor also sees the presence of the “Los Mayos” faction, which exerts more direct control over production and trafficking routes, while “Los Chapitos” are engaged in a more indirect dispute for control of strategic routes leading to Chihuahua and Sinaloa.
