Authorities confirmed the apprehension of criminal ringleader Roberto de los Santos, alias “El Bucanas,” who operated across vast swathes of the states of Puebla, Veracruz, and Hidalgo, and who had been a fugitive for over a decade.
Law enforcement agencies detained a total of seven members of the criminal group known as “Los Bucanas” in the locality of Tres Cabezas, Chignahuapan; the group allegedly spearheaded crimes such as cargo theft and transport in Hidalgo and the border region shared with Puebla.
Those detained during this operation included Roberto de los Santos, (“El Bucanas”), who is subject to an active arrest warrant for the crime of homicide; Gerardo N. (“Penales”), who faces charges for crimes against public health and is subject to an active arrest warrant for assault and robbery; Saúl N. (“El Fósil”), who has a criminal record for illegal firearm possession; Efrén N. (“El Marañón”), who has a criminal record for violating the General Population Law; Juan Antonio N. (“El Charo”); as well as Fabián N. and Juan Carlos N.
Officers seized two AK-47 assault rifles, one AR-15 assault rifle, one Galil-style rifle, a Mossberg shotgun, two 9mm pistols, live ammunition of various calibers, and a pickup truck bearing license plates from the state of Tamaulipas.
The agencies involved noted that this dismantling of the group helps combat crimes such as fuel theft, kidnapping, vehicle theft, extortion, dispossession, and homicide. Authorities reiterated their commitment to working jointly to ensure the safety and peace of mind of local families.
“El Bucanas” operated within the so-called “Red Triangle”—a central region of the state of Puebla comprising the municipalities of Tepeaca, Tecamachalco, Quecholac, and Palmar de Bravo.
He also maintained control over regions of Veracruz, and his influence had extended into Hidalgo. According to his criminal record, “El Bucanas” previously served as a police commander in the Veracruz municipality of Maltrata.
He subsequently operated as a regional leader for the Zetas cartel before breaking away to become a violent independent leader. For years, bounties were offered for his whereabouts. However, the alleged criminal boss evaded the special operations launched to capture him.
