At least four people dead and 11 were injured as the result of a confrontation between alleged criminal groups, which took place from around 04:00 hours on March 25, 2024, on the highway that leads from Ocozocoautla to the capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez, at the height of the town of Llano San Juan, located in the municipality of Berriozábal, in the Centro region of the state of Chiapas.

The initial police reports – cited by local media – indicated that the alleged organized crime groups engaged in a confrontation using high-caliber weapons, which continued until around 7:00 am on March 25th, 2024.

At the site of the clash, four trucks were set on fire, and three others were abandoned. Witnesses passing by the location recorded the scene of the confrontation on video, and in one of the images, a man’s body could be seen lying dead in the middle of the road.

Similarly, a passenger vehicle from the company Cristóbal Colón was caught in the crossfire and received multiple shots from high-caliber weapons. Additionally, freight trailers loaded with merchandise were hit by bullets.

In the so-called “Death Cruise” or “La Pochota”, at the intersection that gives access to the urban area of Ocozocoautla, the abandoned vehicles were left burned and elements from the municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department had to come to put out the flames.

Around 8:00 am on March 25, 2024, the site of the confrontation was already secured by elements of the Mexican Army and the National Guard. However, there were no records of people being detained for these events.

Until this was written, the Chiapas Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and the state prosecutor’s office had not issued a statement regarding this, so the official figures of deceased persons were unknown. It had also not been determined which criminal groups were involved in the confrontation.
