Baja California-born researcher and writer José Manuel Valenzuela Arce received on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Palace of Fine Arts, the 2023 National Arts and Literature Award in the category of History, Social Sciences, and Philosophy.
Composed of Verónica Zárate Toscano, Roberto Sánchez Benítez, Martín Castro Guzmán, Cristina María Millán Vásquez, Raúl Homero López Espinosa, Carlos Illades Aguiar, and María Teresa Uriarte Castañeda, the Jury awarded the Valenzuela Arce Prize “for the quality, diversity, relevance, and interdisciplinary nature of their academic work and dissemination in the fields of cultural studies, borders, violence, and migration.”
José Manuel Valenzuela Arce was born in Tecate, Baja California in 1954. He holds a doctorate in Social Sciences with a specialization in Sociology from El Colegio de México. He is an honorary research professor at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (El Colef) and an honorary researcher of the National System of Researchers.
“Among other titles, he is the author of “Chief of Chiefs: Corridos and Narcoculture in Mexico” (2012), “The Future has Already Happened: Socioanthropology of Youth in Modernity” (2014), “Traces of Blood and Fire: Bionecropolitics and Youth-icide in Latin America” (2019), among others.”
After the ceremony in Mexico City, El Colef issued:
“This Tuesday, February 27th, at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the National Arts and Literature Award for 2023 was celebrated. The prize in the area of History, Social Sciences, and Philosophy was awarded to José Manuel Valenzuela Arce, researcher at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in the Department of Cultural Studies.”
In addition to Valenzuela, Beatriz Espejo Díaz was also recognized in the Linguistics and Literature category; Guillermo Velázquez Benavidez in Arts and Popular Traditions; and Claudio de Jesús Valdés Kuri in Fine Arts. The federal Ministry of Culture announced that the National Prize for Arts and Literature will be awarded in the first quarter of 2024.
