FGR investigates route of 59 million liters of seized fuel
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office is investigating the origin and distribution route of 59 million liters of fuel seized at a Guanajuato property where authorities also found storage tanks, cargo units and related documents.
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office is tracing the origin and distribution route of the 59 million liters of fuel seized in Guanajuato, President Claudia Sheinbaum said. According to El Financiero, Sheinbaum described the inquiry as a new investigative line being pursued jointly by the federal prosecutor’s office, Pemex and the state government.
The seizure took place in the municipality of San José Iturbide, where security personnel also found 10 storage tanks, three cargo units, containers and documents connected to the investigation. The operation ended without arrests. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said detentions are expected as investigators determine who was behind the fuel of unverified origin found at the property.
El Financiero reported that the investigation began July 3 with the detention of a person accused of unloading diesel from a tanker with a 33,000-liter capacity at a gas station in San Luis de la Paz. Information obtained from that case led authorities to searches at the gas station, an LP-gas facility in Dolores Hidalgo and the San José Iturbide site where the fuel was located.
García Harfuch called the seizure one of the largest reported fuel-theft operations in Mexico and said arrests commonly follow major seizures. Asked about the property, he said it belongs to Pemex, while adding that the Attorney General’s Office will provide details about the site’s legal status and the continuing investigation.
