Nayarit authorities warn that “gota a gota” loans can lead to threats and violent collection

Nayarit’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) is warning residents about informal “gota a gota” loans, which offer quick cash with few requirements but can carry excessive interest, harassment, threats and violent collection. Tribuna de la Bahía reported that the arrangements may be presented as easy money with “no paperwork” and no credit-bureau check, while the authority cautioned that some offers may conceal extortion schemes.

According to the Nayarit SSPC, lenders can impose excessive daily interest that makes repayment difficult. If a borrower misses required installments, threats, harassment and even the taking of personal belongings may follow. The loans may be offered directly at a person’s home or business, often without proof of income, a guarantor or a credit-history review; in some cases, the lender may request only an identification document.

The authority said these lenders commonly offer small amounts quickly in exchange for frequent payments and may collect directly at the debtor’s home or business. It advised residents to review the terms carefully, calculate the total repayment, avoid informal financing and unregulated apps, and verify that any financial institution is registered with Mexico’s National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users, known as Condusef.

The SSPC also urged people to protect personal data and not hand over identification documents or property deeds or allow access to contacts stored on a phone. It said no one may threaten, intimidate or assault a person to collect a debt, and that extortion or violent collection may constitute crimes. People facing threats, extortion or violent collection in Nayarit can make an anonymous report to 089, available 24 hours a day; emergencies should be reported to 911.
