In Coyuca de Catalán, Guerrero, organized crime is attacking not only with the explosives or firearms we have come to expect, but now even with bottles of sulfuric acid intended to poison the local population.
This comes nearly a month after the Guajes de Ayala community—located in the mountains of Coyuca de Catalán—was attacked with explosives dropped from drones. Residents reported finding 120 homemade explosive devices and 40 kilograms of gunpowder in the surrounding woods—materials allegedly used to manufacture the explosives deployed in the attack.
According to the community secretary, during a patrol conducted by residents and authorities, they also discovered trenches used by the criminals, as well as bottles of sulfuric acid used to attack the communities of El Pescado, Hacienda de Dolores, and Los Órganos.
These containers held what was essentially poison—substances meant to poison the local population. Upon contact with the throat or nasal passages, the substance causes internal hemorrhaging—including in the lungs—leading to lung collapse and instant death.
Residents of Guajes de Ayala stated that the 120 explosive devices were destroyed by the authorities. The community remains in fear of a renewed attack. Authorities in Guerrero indicated that surveillance patrols are continuing in the region, though no new incidents have been reported so far. Uriel Bello, Azteca Noticias.
