Eduardo Jonathan Martínez Larios, better known as El Owen, was killed Thursday inside Mazatlán’s El Castillo prison. Families were there for visiting day when the shooting broke out.
The official toll is 10 dead—nine prisoners and a visiting child—with another 16 inmates wounded. Visits have been suspended.
El Owen was one of the four Martínez Larios brothers linked to Los Chapitos in southern Sinaloa. His brothers are Gabriel Nicolás Martínez Larios, El Gabito or El 80, and Óscar Luciano Martínez Larios, El Casco or El 81. Their other brother, José Luis Martínez Larios, El Monstruo, was killed in Mazatlán in 2015.

Several different accounts of the attack have reached Cartel Insider throughout the day. They don’t agree on how it started or who was behind it.
Some point to a betrayal. But there are too many unknowns to say who turned on whom, who gave the order, or exactly how the attack unfolded.
What we know is that El Owen was killed inside El Castillo while families were visiting. What happened around him is still being pieced together.
Authorities say two handguns were recovered inside the prison. How those weapons got in is now part of the investigation.
Developing. We’ll follow up with another post as more details are confirmed.
