The drug trafficker’s arrest is another success for the security strategy implemented by Sheinbaum.
Federal authorities have detained 10 members of the criminal group *Gente del Guano* (El Guano’s Mob), led by Aureliano Guzmán Loera—alias “El Guano”—the brother of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Among those detained is Abel “N,” El Guano Guzmán’s right-hand man and most trusted associate.
The other detainees were identified as follows:
Eber Israel “N,” El Guano’s financial and logistical operator, responsible for the procurement of weaponry, drones, and explosives.
Etzair Lugo “N,” head of security and the individual in charge of engaging in confrontations with rival groups, specifically the Beltrán Leyva Cartel and the “Mayo” Zambada faction.
The security operations were carried out in the village of La Cebadilla, within the municipality of Tamazula, Durango. The operation involved the commands of the 3rd Military Region and the 4th Naval Region, comprising personnel from the Army, the National Guard, and the Navy.
During the operation, authorities seized a 5.56mm caliber Minimi machine gun, 10 long guns of various calibers, one handgun, explosive devices, as well as numerous magazines and cartridges.
These arrests were achieved thanks to cooperation between Mexican and U.S. authorities. Both the detainees and the seized items have been placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
It is worth noting that this marks the second time the Federal Government has deployed a special operation—apparently aimed at capturing this capo—in the mountainous region of Durango.
The most recent previous attempt took place in December 2025 in Tamazula, where federal forces deployed helicopters and ground units but failed to capture Aureliano Guzmán Loera, alias “El Guano.”
Security Strategy Against Drug Trafficking
Although President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has affirmed that her administration’s security strategy doesn’t seek to declare war on drug trafficking, it has indeed yielded positive results regarding the significant elimination of criminal ringleaders.
The most notable figure thus far in her six-year term is Nemesio Oseguera González—known as “El Mencho”—founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who was mortally wounded during an operation in Jalisco on Sunday, February 22.
The current security strategy is based on four pillars: addressing the root causes of violence, consolidating the National Guard, strengthening intelligence and investigative capabilities, and fostering coordination across all levels of government.
According to the Mexican government, its primary objectives include reducing crime and neutralizing criminal groups through a comprehensive approach.
“Calderón’s ‘war on drugs’ will not return. We do not seek extrajudicial killings—which is precisely what used to happen. What will *we* employ? Prevention, addressing root causes, intelligence, and presence—these are the elements of this four-pillar strategy,” Sheinbaum asserted during one of her daily morning press conferences.
