Author’s note: This is my breakdown of the Bonques Brothers who were sanctioned on November 19, 2024. The organizational chart above is high resolution.
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned the Meza brothers, better known as “Los Bonques,” in a significant blow to their operations in Xalisco, Nayarit. As key operatives for the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), the Meza brothers gained notoriety for their role in producing and trafficking heroin and fentanyl. This action highlights their influence within CJNG and their critical role in the cartel’s strategy of territorial and narcotics control.

Xalisco, Nayarit: A Strategic Hub
Xalisco, located just 6 miles south of Tepic, Nayarit’s capital, is a small municipality of 50,000 residents. Historically an agricultural town, it became infamous in the 1990s as a center for “black tar” heroin production. Today, it serves as a hub for synthetic opioids like fentanyl due to its proximity to Pacific ports and key highways leading to the U.S. border. Its modest infrastructure and unassuming appearance misrepresent its critical role in CJNG’s operations, where the Meza brothers manage heroin labs and fentanyl production facilities.

Who Are Los Bonques?
Led by Roberto “Beto Bonques” Castellanos Meza (49), the Meza brothers operate as a tight-knit family unit embedded in CJNG’s hierarchy. Known for their efficiency and ruthlessness, the brothers oversee heroin and fentanyl production while managing key distribution routes. Each plays a distinct role in the organization:

Roberto “Beto Bonques” Castellanos Meza (49)
Roberto leads the group and directs the Meza family’s operations. His sharp features and piercing glare reflect his authority both within the family and CJNG. He secures raw materials for synthetic drug production through his connections with Colombian suppliers.

Juan Carlos Castañeda Meza (47)
Juan Carlos handles logistics and regional distribution. His broad face and composed demeanor complement his role as the family’s planner, ensuring smooth operations across their network.

Iván Atzayácatl Castañeda Meza (40)
Iván acts as the group’s enforcer, managing “security” operations and maintaining loyalty. His intimidating presence and no-nonsense demeanor project his readiness to handle rivals or threats.

Giovanni Castañeda Meza (37)
The youngest of the brothers, Giovanni oversees finances and likely manages money laundering. His approachable appearance, with a rounder face and groomed facial hair, contrasts with his behind-the-scenes role.

The Plaza Boss of Nayarit
The U.S. Treasury sanctions also targeted José Adrián Castillo López (48), the CJNG plaza boss operating in Nayarit. Castillo López manages heroin production and trafficking in the region and directly reports to the Meza brothers. His influence extends to coordinating local protection through bribery and violence, ensuring law enforcement and rival groups cannot disrupt CJNG operations.
Why Sanctioned?
In November 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the Meza brothers and Castillo López under the Kingpin Act. These sanctions freeze their assets, block their ability to interact with the U.S. financial system, and extend to intermediaries supporting their network. By targeting their financial infrastructure, the U.S. aims to disrupt the Meza brothers’ supply chains and weaken CJNG’s narcotics trade.
Conclusion
The U.S. Treasury’s action against Los Bonques and their plaza boss, José Adrián Castillo López, marks a critical step in combating CJNG’s empire. The Meza brothers serve as key figures in producing and trafficking heroin and fentanyl, blending family loyalty with cartel brutality. While the sanctions may weaken their operations it will not dismantle their network.
For now, Los Bonques and Castillo López remain a symbol of CJNG’s entrenchment in global drug trafficking. Their hold on Xalisco weakens under pressure, but their legacy of power and fear continues to cast a long shadow.
