In a significant operation, authorities in Nuevo León seized over 800 kilograms (1785.744 lbs.) of marijuana and arrested three alleged members of a criminal group in Apodaca. This action underscores the persistent efforts to combat organized crime in the region.
The operation was conducted by the Mexican Army, the Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office, and the State Police during patrols in the Cosmópolis Eighth Sector subdivision. Officers observed individuals transferring boxes from a Mercedes Benz truck and another vehicle with Jalisco plates near Andrómeda Avenue and the Northeast Bypass. Upon inspection, 45 boxes containing approximately 810 kilograms of marijuana were discovered.
The detained individuals, identified as Arnulfo “N” (49), Pedro “N” (45), and Lázaro “N” (40), are suspected members of a criminal organization operating in Apodaca. Additionally, authorities seized a box containing around a thousand cartridges. The Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) estimated the drugs’ value at over two million pesos, marking a substantial financial blow to drug trafficking groups.

Apodaca, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area, has faced security challenges, including organized crime incidents. In July 2024, human remains were found in the municipality, with indications pointing to the involvement of the Sinaloa Cartel. In November 2024, four individuals linked to a national criminal group were arrested in Apodaca and El Carmen, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in the region.
The recent seizure reflects the continuous efforts of security forces to disrupt criminal organizations in Nuevo León. However, multiple criminal groups continue to pose significant challenges to public safety. Authorities aim to dismantle networks facilitating drug trafficking and related activities, striving to enhance security for residents of Apodaca and the broader Nuevo León area.

In June 2021, Mexico’s Supreme Court decriminalized recreational marijuana, permitting adults 18+ to possess up to 28 grams and cultivate six plants for personal use. However, full legalization remains stalled due to the lack of a regulatory framework for legal sales and distribution.
In California, high licensing costs make it nearly impossible for small-scale growers to compete, leaving them unable to sell their product to dispensaries. Meanwhile, dispensaries often turn to cheaper black-market weed to cut costs.
