Vicente Zambada Niebla, also known as ‘El Vicentillo’, learned in 2007 that his former bodyguard, José Rodrigo Aréchiga Gamboa, ‘El Chino Ántrax’, was also involved in drug trafficking, as he had important clients such as the Cabrera Sarabia family. However, he later realized the peculiar method used for transportation.
The son of ‘The Lord of the Hat’ found out that ‘The Solo’ was moving marijuana in the trailers of a renowned poultry company, in the pure style of ‘Breaking Bad’ with the front business of ‘Los Pollos Hermanos’.
According to Zambada Niebla, José Rodrigo could transport approximately two tons in the secret compartment of the trucks. The drugs were placed inside the facilities of the Sonoran company, so they already had one of the supervisors corrupted to give them access.
“‘Chino’ told me in 2007 that he was also involved in drug trafficking, from Culiacán to the border, bringing money back to Culiacán. He attempted to use this same system to move drugs and money for other people, charging them for the service. ‘Chino’s’ system involved taking the drugs to the border, where they were passed on to others for transport into the United States. He told me that he usually handed off the drugs to the same clients who had paid for the transport to the border. His clients were responsible for transporting the drugs into the United States themselves. ‘Chino’ also informed me that he used two refrigerated trailers to transport the drugs. He confided in me that he had a source within the legitimate company Bachoco, which is in charge of transporting chicken, eggs, and other products in Mexico.” These are the words of ‘El Vicentillo’ in the book ‘El Traidor’.
Journalist Anabel Hernández, in her work published in 2019, compared the criminal organization led by ‘El Mayo’ Zambada to the series starring Bryan Cranston, mentioning that not even the fictional character of ‘Gus Fring’ would have had that idea taken from television.
No one would distrust a company that became known through such comedic advertising of disguised chickens, which is why all shipments were successful.
Of the many methods in which ‘El Chapo’ and ‘El Mayo’ manage to transport drugs, undoubtedly the use of Bachoco trailers has been one of the most creative and unsuspected. Anyone in Mexico familiar with Bachoco and their friendly and sometimes ironic advertising campaign featuring cute chickens and eggs in disguise would hardly believe that these trucks loaded with frozen chickens are actually carrying drugs. Even ‘Gustavo Fring’ from ‘Breaking Bad’ couldn’t have planned it better. The business of ‘Los Pollos Hermanos’ doesn’t seem as impossible compared to what ‘El Chino Ántrax’ was able to do,” journalist Anabel Hernandez recounted in her book ‘The Traitor’.
