In recent years, the world of narcotrafficking has experienced a series of changes, with the downfall of some leaders and the departure and rise of others, who have managed to create a criminal empire to such an extent that they have become some of the wealthiest people in the world. Such is the case with Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who was featured in Forbes magazine.
Although some of them have already passed away, they left their families considerable inheritances, as a result of their successful operations of illicit origin, while hiding from authorities.

The one leading this list is Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who has a fortune of 4 billion dollars, a result of his operations for the Sinaloa Cartel, where he served as a leader for the past three decades. Currently, he is in a prison in the United States serving a life sentence.

The former leader of the Medellín Cartel has amassed a wealth of 3 billion dollars, as a result of his involvement in drug trafficking during the 1980s, which even led him to be considered the seventh richest man in the world, according to Forbes magazine.

‘‘The Cocaine Godmother’, as she was also known, amassed a fortune of 2 billion dollars. She was a famous Colombian drug lord, who played a crucial role in the drug trade in Miami during the 1970s and 1980s.’

Khun Sa was a drug trafficker from Myanmar who operated the Shan United Army. Khun Sa was heavily involved in the opium trade and his fortune was worth billions of dollars.

“El Señor de los Cielos” was a Mexican drug lord who led the Juárez Cartel, which led him to amass a fortune of one billion dollars, as a result of drug trafficking to the United States and his alliance with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
After it was revealed in the year 2019 about the great fortune that ‘The Lord of the Mountain’ has, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, argued that he wanted to confiscate the assets of the drug lord, which could strengthen the Institute for Returning Stolen Assets to the People.
“I believe that everything that is confiscated and has to do with Mexico must be returned to Mexico, to all Mexicans, and the Government of the United States will also agree to give back what belongs to Mexico. But we must go through the proper procedures because I do not recall that in the past there was a request for the return of resources,” AMLO argued.
