A federal judge granted protection to Servando Gómez Martínez, known as ‘La Tuta’, after the last recognized leader of the Knights Templar filed a legal appeal for alleged acts of isolation against him. He reported being a victim of these acts while being held at Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation (Cefereso) No. 1, also known as ‘El Altiplano’.
According to data consulted by Infobae Mexico, ‘La Tuta’ filed a writ of amparo before the Thirteenth District Court for Constitutional Review in Criminal Matters of Mexico City last Tuesday, where he claimed to be a victim of “cruel and inhuman treatment, isolation, segregation, and punishment.”
The native of Michoacán also accused the authorities of the country’s maximum security prison of “refusal to provide food, isolation and torture”.
Before that, the judge approved an immediate suspension for Gómez Martínez and sent an exhortation to the District Court Judge in Amparo and Federal Trials in the State of Mexico, with residency in Toluca, to commission the corresponding court clerk in order to appear at ‘El Altiplano’ and personally notify the resolution.
“And every time that one of the acts involves the torture that the plaintiff claims to be subjected to, they must attest to their physical integrity and the conditions in which they find themselves,” the source specified.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that ‘La Tuta’ has filed some type of legal protection.
In 2021, he/she reported not having clothing or shoes in good condition, so he/she requested permission to bring in underwear, shirts, and footwear.
Then, in January 2022, the court approved for him to receive psychiatric treatment and medication, after the former criminal leader was diagnosed with anxiety disorder, headaches, and insomnia.

Servando Gómez Martínez was born on February 6th, 1966 in Arteaga, Michoacán, so he is currently 57 years old.
Before getting involved in drug trafficking, he was a teacher and farmer, which is why another of his well-known nicknames is ‘El Profe’ (The Teacher). Data indicates that in December 2010, he was still on the federal payroll for his job as a teacher.
Investigations by the Office of the Attorney General (PGR) indicate that ‘La Tuta’ was a member of the Michoacana Family, where she worked alongside Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, also known as ‘El Chayo’.
However, after the breaking up of this criminal group in 2011, he joined the ranks of the newly formed Knights Templar cartel. The PGR described him as “one of the most violent men of the Michoacana Family”.
Gómez Martínez was captured in Morelia, Michoacán, during the early hours of February 27, 2015. After that, he was immediately transported to ‘El Altiplano’.
In December of 2022, he was sentenced to 47 years in prison for crimes against health and organized crime.
