José Alberto “G” alias La Kena was captured on January 18th when he was inside a department store in San Pedro Garza García, in Nuevo León. The initial reports indicated that the alleged leader of the Scorpion Group of the Gulf Cartel was arrested thanks to a facial recognition system.
Currently, the man, with whom authorities in Tamaulipas offered a reward of 2.5 million pesos, is confined in the maximum security prison of the Altiplano in the State of Mexico. His arrest was carried out without any shots being fired.
After the man’s arrest, some photographs revealed that he was wearing a jacket at the time of his capture, with a series of images appearing in other messages linked to the Gulf Cartel.
On Friday the 19th, a few hours after his capture, authorities obtained information that La Kena would be linked to at least two properties that were raided in Nuevo León.
As a result of this arrest, it emerged that searches will be carried out in some homes in the metropolitan area in a few moments, and we will inform you later,” expressed Pedro Arce Jardón, head of the Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office.
Through Google Maps, it is possible to see how the house, which is now under the protection of the authorities, used to look. As of June 2021, it can be seen that the house was for sale at that time, and a small change is the structure on the top of the property that is now painted brown, whereas before, it was grey.
Near the house where the search was carried out, there are at least two parks, and in another area, there is a roundabout and some educational schools. In the area, there have been no criminal activities linked to drug trafficking, what stands out in the news is that there have been some traffic accidents, including the death of a cyclist in the area in 2020 after an accident with a truck.

The above coincides with the perception of safety in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García, as it is usually ranked high regarding the subject. In previous months, threatening messages have appeared in said municipality, and they talk about various criminal activities.

In addition, the mentioned property is located just a few minutes away from the detention center of La Kena, as it is a transfer of about 8 minutes by car. It is worth mentioning that several drug lords have lived in San Pedro Garza García, even an investigation by the media outlet Sin Embargo, carried out by Melva Frutos, indicated that until 2013, the children of prominent figures in the drug world studied in exclusive schools in said municipality, which led to attempts to implement filters in educational centers at that time.
“This person was carrying out activities in San Pedro, and it is thanks to the ongoing coordination that these arrests can be achieved,” highlighted the mayor of San Pedro Garza Garcia, after the arrest of the man also known as alias Cyclone 19.
This subject would be related to the kidnapping of four American citizens in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, that occurred in March 2023. In addition, during the morning press conference on Friday, January 19, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador spoke about the kidnapping of migrants.
“Do you remember when some foreigners were kidnapped in Reynosa? Do you remember, we found them all? because an action was carried out, because that’s how we are. Do you remember that, not too long ago?”
Some local media outlets pointed out that La Kena could be related to the actions described by the president, but when questioned about this topic, López Obrador said: “I cannot disclose anything because it would put the investigation at risk, I cannot risk an investigation.”
