Like other criminal groups, the Gulf Cartel, specifically the Escorpión Group faction, has stayed afloat thanks to the involvement of entire families in its structure.
For decades, this organization has nurtured its ranks thanks to the descendants of Mario, Antonio and Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, and the same has happened in recent times with people linked to José Alberto García Vilano, also known as ‘La Kena 19’, the top leader of Los Escorpiones who was arrested in Nuevo León on January 18th.
According to reports consulted by this media, at least four relatives of this individual would be well positioned within said cell.
An example is Nereyda Landaverde Vilano, also known as ‘La Nere’, identified as half-sister of ‘La Kena’ and supposed financial operator of the Escorpión Group, which controls fondas and food businesses in Matamoros in order to manage resources from illicit origins.
In official documents from the Government of Tamaulipas, ‘La Nere’ appears as a defendant in a trial that resulted in the auction of a house.
It was on July 27th, 2017 when the Official Gazette of the state revealed that the First Civil Court of First Instance, based in Matamoros, ordered to put up for auction in a public sale a property located in the Palo Verde Subdivision.
The determination arose from a mortgage trial that the National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) filed against Landaverde Vilano and a man identified as Juan Enrique Ávalos Ávila.
It was a property located on Sierra Sombrerete Street Number 47, with a land area of 105 square meters, whose auction date was set for August 7, 2017. At that time, people interested in participating as bidders had to cover the price of 179,333 pesos corresponding to the expert appraisal.
Although there is no public information available to determine if the auction of that house was indeed completed, it is possible to view the property until October 2022 through the Google Maps navigation system.
When entering the corresponding address in the platform, a house is displayed in pink color with a white gate, a small patio, and a clay tile roof.
Due to the coincidence in last names, it is unofficially presumed that Nereyda Landaverde and Juan Enrique Ávalos could be the mother and father of Juan Enrique Ávalos Landaverde, also known as ‘La Pingua’ or ‘Scorpion 18’.
“La Pingua”, nephew of “La Kena”, is located as one of the main leaders of the Scorpion Group and the apparent responsible for controlling the Matamoros territory.
