The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) of Mexico has initiated a comprehensive investigation following a massive seizure by the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) and the National Guard of approximately 60 tons of chemical precursors used in drug manufacturing in Alamos, Sonora. The discovery, marking a significant stride in combating narcotics production, occurred approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Mojarit, covering a substantial 2,500 square meter area divided into three sections.

Sedena and National Guard personnel, during routine reconnaissance missions, encountered this extensive site, leading to the confiscation of over 300 drums, each with a 200-liter capacity, filled with various liquids. Additionally, authorities found substances packed in sacks and boxes, stationary gas tanks, 25-kilogram bags of assorted chemicals, industrial power generators, water tanks with hoses, a backhoe, a natural gas pipeline, and multiple gas ovens, indicating the large-scale and sophisticated operation of this clandestine lab.

Upon securing the site, it was handed over to the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) agents and expert services personnel to conduct thorough inspections, processing, and investigative work. The FGR emphasized the significance of the seizure, highlighting the various chemicals and equipment intended for narcotic production, including solvents, reagents, and catalysts essential in synthesizing drugs like fentanyl.
The Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) defines essential chemicals as substances that, while not being chemical precursors themselves, are instrumental in the production of narcotics. This categorization underscores the importance of effectively intercepting such materials to disrupt the drug manufacturing supply chain.

This operation demonstrates the commitment of Mexican authorities at all levels to dismantle the drug trade’s infrastructure. The seized assets, now under the jurisdiction of the Federal Public Prosecutor, are a testament to the ongoing efforts to curb the production and distribution of illegal substances within and beyond the nation’s borders. The shared photographs from the raid reveal the scale and complexity of the illicit operation, signaling a significant blow to narcotic traffickers and emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation in the fight against drug-related activities. As the investigation progresses, the implications of this seizure are expected to resonate, marking a pivotal moment in the broader campaign against the illegal drug trade.
