According to INEGI data these were the numbers
From January to December 2023, 31,62 murders were registered in the country, an average of 85 victims per day in preliminary figures were published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Although the aforementioned figure is lower than the 33,287 victims in 2022, it confirms that during the six-year term of office of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador more than 31,000 murders are committed per year, which means that there is a stagnation of homicidal violence at high levels.
According to the Inegi report, during 2020, the year of the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a historic figure of 36,773 victims of intentional homicide in the country, which to date remains unchanged.
In 2019, the first year of López Obrador’s government, 36,661 were counted; in 2021, 35,700; in 2022, 33,287; and last year, a total of 31,062.
Nationally, the murder rate in 2023 was 24 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the main means used to provoke homicides was firearms with 70%, followed by the use of a knife, with 9.5%, and hanging, strangulation and suffocation with 7%.
The states with the most murders in 2023 were: Guanajuato, with 3,746; State of Mexico, 2,849; Baja California, 2,642;
Chihuahua, 2,396; Michoacán, 1,865; Guerrero, 1,720; Jalisco, 1,550; Morelos, 1,527; Nuevo León, 1,355; Sonora, 1,453;
Zacatecas, 1,073, in absolute numbers.
