The arrest of Alexis Jesús—alias “El Brilloso”—on September 9 reinforces the theory that the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo nearly a year ago was planned and carried out with the help of people the mayor trusted implicitly—in this case, his own godson.
On Tuesday, during the suspect’s hearing, authorities revealed chat logs proving his involvement in the homicide. Milenio obtained exclusive access to these text messages; this report is by César Cabrera.
The arrest of Alexis Jesús (“El Brilloso”) reinforces the theory that Carlos Manzo’s murder was planned and executed with the help of his inner circle—specifically, his own godson.
Milenio accessed WhatsApp chats “El Brilloso” sent to acquaintances, confirming his membership in the criminal cell led by Jorge Armando—alias “El Licenciado”—the mastermind behind the Uruapan mayor’s assassination. In one message, he mentioned his accomplices and their ties to the Jalisco Cartel:
“It’s a done deal, guys; I’m in the cool group. We’re all with the boss—’League,’ ‘Gordo King Kong,’ ‘Siri,’ ‘May,’ ‘Valle,’ ‘Ignacio Jaguar’—nothing but tough guys with the balls to roll with the Jalisco bosses.”
In another message, he expressed pride in being part of the group: “The boss picked me, and honestly, it feels great. It’s going to be badass if this happens. My brother ‘Vikingo’ and I are moving up with the bosses.”
He also lashed out at his godfather, Carlos Manzo, going so far as to disown him and justify his death: “I owe nothing to that pain-in-the-ass, even if he is my godfather. He asked for it—that’s what the boss says. He really asked for it, and I’m moving up because of this.”
His involvement in the homicide went beyond merely belonging to the cell; he also leaked information about the mayor’s security detail. “Just ask yourself how I knew exactly how many police officers were guarding my godfather, Carlos Manzo.” How do you think I knew how they were deployed to guard him and what the plan was to take him out?
That’s why they told me I had to be in Trema’s group. Another of “Brilloso’s” duties was monitoring the mayor’s activities on social media, while Samuel—the former director of public relations and protocol for the city council—leaked the private schedule. I’ve been told there’s a guy inside the mayor’s office who’s ready to go.
That guy is going to set it up, and I’m going to check on it. Everything that pops up on Facebook… if something happens that wasn’t planned, I’ll let the crew know. And to tie up loose ends, Brilloso also suggested killing Samuel—claiming he didn’t know him personally, though he was aware of his addictions.
“That guy I’m telling you about at City Hall hits the meth really hard. I don’t know him; I just know he goes by Samuel or Manuel or something like that, but that guy is going to set it up when the time comes to put him to sleep. Hahaha. I think we need to kill that guy, too. Just to make sure there are no snitches left. Yeah, let him get what’s coming to him for being a snitch.”
The cherry on top of the evidence against Letis Jesús was the presentation of a photo showing her alongside Grecia, Manzo, and her brother “El Vikingo” from four years ago, confirming their connection. Brilloso has been formally charged with homicide and aggravated assault and remains in mandatory pretrial detention at the Charo High-Impact Crimes Penitentiary Center.
