Federal and State Forces in Sonora Arrest “El 01,” Alleged Mastermind Behind Drone Attacks in Moris

State authorities had identified him as a high-priority target linked to the “Los Salazar” criminal group.

Hugo Guerrero, alias “El 01,” was arrested during an operation conducted by the Sonora Attorney General’s Office in Hermosillo. The arrest was confirmed by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection during an inter-agency public security meeting.

He had been identified as a high-priority target by state and federal authorities due to his alleged involvement in major violent incidents—including clashes involving drones and explosives—particularly in the areas bordering Yécora (Sonora) and Moris (Chihuahua).

State authorities consider him a key operative of the “Los Salazar” criminal group, which operates in both states and is responsible for a series of armed confrontations involving the use of explosives dropped from drones.

The arrest took place outside a restaurant in Hermosillo on Sunday, June 7, without any confrontation or gunfire. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm restricted for exclusive military use and was subsequently handed over to the authorities for legal processing.

In March 2025, a clash in Moris involved an attack using an explosive dropped from a drone; the device damaged the public square in El Pilar and resulted in three deaths, likely caused by burning vehicles.

Subsequently, between June 5 and June 16, there was an escalation in attacks using explosive-laden drones against Warijó and Pima indigenous communities across several rural settlements. In early July, violence reached the municipal seat with bomb blasts near the municipal government building and homes, as well as a drone-launched explosive attack targeting a man on horseback.

On July 19, three decapitated bodies were found in La Mesa de Las Tunas, alongside two damaged drones, detonators, and explosives seized by the State Attorney General’s Office.
