Investigation led to 59 million-liter Guanajuato fuel seizure
Guanajuato investigators followed a fuel tanker’s route to a San José Iturbide property where authorities secured about 59 million liters of suspected huachicol; the fuel’s origin remains unknown.
The trail leading to the seizure of about 59 million liters of suspected huachicol in Guanajuato began with a fuel tanker, not a chance discovery, El Financiero reported. Juan Mauro González Martínez, Guanajuato’s security secretary, said investigators followed the tanker’s route to a property in La Fragua, in the municipality of San José Iturbide. The search found fuel with characteristics of diesel, premium gasoline and regular gasoline.
According to El Financiero, a federal judge authorized the operation, which was carried out by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office with specialists and state authorities. Investigators secured 10 tanks containing suspected fuel, three cargo units, additional containers and documents. The property, vehicles and product were placed at the disposal of federal prosecutors, while specialists continue measuring, identifying and handling the material to reduce the risks of spills, fires and harm to nearby residents or the environment.
González Martínez said authorities do not yet know the origin of the reported 59 million liters, and no suspect had been detained in connection with this seizure because the investigation was continuing. El Financiero also reported that Guanajuato authorities had seized more than 55,000 liters in February, about 99,000 liters in two March operations and 21,000 liters in August. In another August case, officials found a roughly 50-meter tunnel connected to an active Pemex pipeline.
