Two men sentenced in Sonora fentanyl case
A federal judge sentenced two men to more than eight years each after authorities found 40 packages containing 40 kilograms of a fentanyl-containing substance on a bus in Caborca, Sonora.
A federal judge in Sonora sentenced Julián N and José N to eight years, 10 months and 10 days in prison after authorities found 40 packages containing a total of 40 kilograms of a substance containing fentanyl on a bus in Caborca. According to El Sol de Hermosillo, each man was also ordered to pay a fine of 56,570 pesos after being held criminally responsible for transporting a fentanyl-containing substance.
The case began with an anonymous report about a bus traveling from Guadalajara to Tijuana, Baja California, with drugs allegedly hidden on its roof. Federal Ministerial Police officers with the Criminal Investigation Agency located the bus at kilometer 120+000 on Mexico's Federal Highway 2 in Caborca and stopped it. During the inspection, they arrested the two men and found the packages, according to information attributed to the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR).
El Sol de Hermosillo reported that the suspects and the seizure were placed under the authority of the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Sonora while investigators assembled the case. Prosecutors later presented the evidence to a judge, who determined their criminal responsibility through an abbreviated procedure and imposed the prison terms and fines. The FGR said it will continue investigating and prosecuting federal crimes.
