Reporting and context
Edgar Aarón Vázquez, known as “El General,” was killed during a federal operation to arrest him in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, according to El País México, citing federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch. Authorities identified him as a founder and leader of the Cartel Nuevo Imperio and said officers were serving an organized-crime arrest warrant.
The Security Secretariat said people in a vehicle opened fire on federal agents in the Lomas Verdes area and officers returned fire. Two people died. El País reported that official sources identified the second man as Edwin González, alias “El Ronco,” a former investigative police commander in the State of Mexico.
García Harfuch said Vázquez was under investigation for kidnapping, extortion, homicide, property dispossession, money laundering, fuel theft and drug trafficking to the United States and Canada. Investigators also identified him as the suspected organizer of the July 2024 killing of Mexico City police official Milton Morales Figueroa in Coacalco. Harfuch said that investigation would continue.
El País reported that Vázquez founded the group in 2017 with Óscar Antonio García Alvarado, alias “El 300,” who is imprisoned. The organization subsequently expanded into municipalities in the State of Mexico, parts of Mexico City and Morelos.
The report also linked Vázquez to protection provided in Mexico to former Canadian Olympic athlete Ryan James Wedding, who faces prosecution in the United States. According to the newspaper, Wedding surrendered at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico in January and was transferred north hours later.
